SalvationSacks are created in "episodes" of approximately 10 series
with 10 to 15 bags per series (total of 100 to 150 bags per episode). each bag
is reconstructed from vintage, salvaged and recycled clothing, linens, jewelry,
belts, and other objects from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and
1980s. SalvationSacks proudly creates original, one-of-a-kind, wearable works
of art with uniquely numbered hangtags that list the origins and era of the
textiles and goods used to create each bag.
bag function:
unlike rigid cardboard-lined bags, sturdy SalvationSacks infuse multiple layers
of reinforcement and a soft recycled structure, which allows PINT and GALLON bags
to stand on their own and reinforces the MESSENGER's bottom panel. the interiors
contain a large inside pocket, while a sewn-in hidden magnet provides security
and allows you to open and close the bag with ease. SalvationSacks feature durable
hardware of nickel or antique brass that attach reincarnated belts as shoulder
straps.
bag design process:
scour: the episode creation process begins with scouring
the country for the most eclectic vintage and recycled materials, jewelry
and other objects, which are then grouped together for design and cutting.
cut: the grouped materials are gathered, arranged and hand
cut, with fabric directions flipped and/or rotated for extra individualization
within each episode.
combine: the artist then lovingly arranges just the right
combinations to create each series and each individual bag within that series.
often, additional materials such as leather or special fabrics and more cutting
is needed to further diversify the episode.
sew: each SalvationSack is then hand sewn to exact specifications
in San Diego, California. we shun the use of sweatshops and encourage a collaborative
and fair creative process.
adorn: SalvationSacks uses vintage earrings, pins, buttons,
and other objects from the 1920s through the 1980s, adhered securely to each
SalvationSack using industrial glue and a weighting process. the often indecisive
selection process matches each bag to its perfect adornment.
strap: recycled leather, reptile, fabric, and chain belts
are reincarnated into sturdy bag straps, reinforced and attached by nickel
and antique brass hardware. the belt is measured, hand cut and riveted to
the bag, often incorporating belt buckles to make certain SalvationSacks straps
adjustable in length.
tag: last, but not least, an individualized custom tag
provides you with the origins and era of your bag and its identity within
a series and episode.
